Dish

1666 (dated)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Dish of fritware, decorated in blue and black under a clear glaze. A bracketed rim encloses the flange and its six restrained leafy S-stems alternating with six tightly pressed fine ribbons. The narrow well is plain. A black band surrounds the centre and its incised flower spray. The band is divided into six cartouches each enclosing part of a sgraffito text. The dividers are small lozenge shapes and contain a floret. Four S-stems with a central lotus leaf and smaller sketchy leaves fill the outside with crossed leaves as dividers. There is a large double circle surrounding three large blue tassel marks inside the base ring. Besides a large unsightly round mark and a repair in the centre, its glaze is blotchy, probably underfired. Dated A.H. 1077 (AD 1666).
