Celadon Dish with Inlaid Peony Design

A peony design is enclosed by a double-line medallion at the centre of the inside bottom of this bowl, while the inner sides are decorated with four peony sprays inlaid in black and white. The area immediately below the rim on the inside features a scroll band. The broken pieces of the bowl have been glued together. The area below the rim on the outside is encircled by a double-line band, and the external sides are adorned with four chrysanthemum motifs. The entire dish is covered in a greenish glaze. The low, wide foot has traces of silica supports in three places. Similar celadon dishes were found among the material excavated from the seabed off the coast of Wonsando Island in Boryeong. The dish was made at a kiln in Gangjin in the early 13th century.
