Wine Cup

1100 - 1150 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

The stand is in the form of a lobed saucer resting on a splayed foot with a central socket to hold the cup. It is covered with a crackled celadon glaze and has incised and carved decoration featuring a flowerhead in the socket encircled by a band of lotus petals, a freize of wave motifs and, near the edge, pairs of florets with leafy sprays on the splayed foot. Green-glazed wine cups and stand represent the elegant refinement of Koryo dynasty ceramic taste. Plain examples are dated through archaeological evidence to before 1150.

Both cup and stand are glazed with a clear greenish grey celadon glaze.
