Historical context
North Devon had for centuries produced rough and functional country wares for local use on farms and in dairies, the bulk of the production consisting mainly of such items as jugs and cream pans. These potteries are precisely the kind of local craft which Morris feared was being swept aside by the rise of industrial processes. Several of these old country potteries managed to survive by switching to the production of Art Pottery. This vase is typical of the ware produced in these potteries; a combination of rather timid Art Nouveau and curious Japnese influences, all executed in traditional country techniques.
