Place of origin |
The interior has a table on which is placed three vases of flowers, a carpet and four receptacles. Beside it grow flowers and leaves with a walking bird. Above it are two flying insects and a peacock-like bird turning in flight. The scene is enclosed by a border of foliate ornament, a band of floral sprays and insects and a border just below the rim of flowers, leaves and stalks like classic oriental scroll motifs. The exterior has a band of ju-i scrolls around the foot with above it radiating leaves and ribands. The sides have eight panels containing standing and flying birds and insects around urns of flowers supported on foliate ornament enclosing winged cupids' heads. Between and above the panels are bands of flowers, leaves and classic oriental scrolls. The border around the rim also has grotesque masks alternating with panels containing flowering shrubs growing from mounds, in turn alternating with oriental landscape scenes.
Body colour: Buff.
Glaze: White and lumpy, barely covering the body in places. The underside within the foot-rim has unglazed areas. A kwaart has almost certainly been used.
Shape: A ridge runs round the exterior some 6 cms below the rim. (Alphabetic shape codes as used in appendix to Archer. Delftware. 1997)
