India and Hand on a Daneul Leaf

Photograph
2003 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Accra Shepp first began printing photographs on leaves in 1992. This leaf was flattened and dried before it underwent several treatments, including, finally, the application of a light-sensitive coating to record and fix the image. It is part of a series that explores the importance of simple, often overlooked gestures, such as a raised hand, as an age-old form of communication. The use of the leaf as a surface for the photograph enforces a sense of primeval ancestry; as if it were an impossible photographic artefact from a pre-photographic culture.
