Charles Rennie Mackintosh (1868-1928) Detail of a Pomegranate Pattern, 1891 Pencil The drawing shows a detail of a pomegranate pattern, probably copied from a 16th century Italian textile or representation of a textile in a painting. Mackintosh would have seen such real and painted fabrics during his travels through Italy in 1891, when this drawing was made, as part of his Alexander Thomson Scholarship which the young artist had won a year earlier. Mackintosh visited most of the cathedral cities of Italy and toured the principal art collections, making many sketches afgter historic works of art and architecture. More than merely copying the ancient model however, Mackintosh here used an assertive pencil line to render the pomegranate, reviving the quintessential organic character of the writhing branches, curling leaves and blossoms that define the vegetable pattern. Mackintosh's enthusiasm for floral motifs continued throughout his career, informing such decorative works as textiles, designs for which are now in the Victoria & Albert Museum.
