  • J.R.H. Weaver (1882–1965) Avila Cathedral About 1910–30 Weaver photographed architectural structures throughout Spain. A follower of Frederick Evans, he was interested in the delicate effects of light and shadow seen in interiors. He diligently recorded the conditions for each of the images he made and kept a detailed journal of his techniques. Avila, the first Gothic cathedral built in Spain, is built into the city walls.   • Weaver, an Oxford historian, specialised in photographing Spanish architecture. He captured the luminosity and detail of interiors by continuing to use platinum prints which had been popular in the 1890s. He followed the aesthetic of Frederick Evans, the premier photographer of church architecture, who advised: ‘try for a record of emotion rather than a piece of topography’. (20/11/2012)
