Dish

ca. 1678-1685 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

A bust portrait of Charles II inscribed C R 2 in blue and manganese-purple. Three stilt marks on the front (8 cms point to point).
Body colour: Dark buff.
Glaze: Shiny white with a slightly pink area on the front. A lead-glaze with darker streaks radiating from the foot over a pale slip covers the entire back. Foot-rim wiped almost entirely clean of glaze. The lead-glaze appears to cover an area of tin-glaze around the rim. Large areas of pitted and blackened glaze shows signs of localised over-firing.
Shape: Shape B with a flatter, more pronounced rim but without a groove. Foot pierced with one hole before firing. (Alphabetic shape codes as used in appendix to Archer. Delftware. 1997)
