The second Covent Garden Theatre burnt down on the 5th March 1856. The third theatre, leased to Frederick Gye, was designed by the architect Edward Middleton Barry and built by the Lucas Brothers. It reopened on Saturday15th May 1858 with a production of Meyerbeer's Les Hugenots starring Mario and Grisi that was rehearsed at the Lyceum Theatre. An article in The Times, 14 May 1858, stressed the huge amount of work still to be completed before the theatre and the opera would be ready, but nevertheless decided that: 'the new Covent Garden opera house will have no theatre in the world to equal it'. The work was completed in time, and the opera and the theatre were much admired.
