Physical description
Mug of tin-glazed earthenware, painted. Chinese figure seated in an oriental landscape ('Chinaman-in-grasses') with oriental classic scroll motifs around the mouth and alternating ovals and groups of strokes on the outside of the handle in white tin-glaze. The mouth has a silver (?) lip mount with a pierced diaper border probably of later date (18th century?).
Body colour: Buff. Glaze: Strong dark blue on exterior, interior and underside except for area around edge of base which is wiped clean of glaze.
Shape: Handle flat on inside, rounded on outside with pointed terminal. Slightly concave on underside. (Alphabetic shape codes as used in appendix to Archer. Delftware. 1997)
