Plaque
ca. 1750-1755 (made)
Artist/Maker | |
Place of origin |
Plaque, buff earthenware body with bluish white glaze, pooling slightly on the back. It is painted in blue with two girls holding hands in a landscape with birds and classical ruins. The left hand figure has extensive pentimenti showing the head and upper part of the body leaning forward and arm raised slightly higher. The improbable position of the bird standing on the left hand girl's arm was probably dictated by a wish to divert attention from these alterations. The back is inscribed "E/A TAYLOR". There is a scar at the edge on the front which may have been the position of a peg during firing. Two holes for suspension pierced through the upper part before glazing.
