Place of origin |
A small image of Karttikeya, who is also known by several other names, such as Subrahmanya and Murugan, especially in the south of India. Here he is shown with six heads and twelve arms, holding a range of weapons in ten hands while he holds his front pair of hands in abhaya and varada mudras. He sits in lalitasana on the back of a peacock with a snake in its mouth. The figures are detailed in the round. The peacock stands on engraved tiered rectangular base with lotus petal decoration. The image shows moderate wear from devotional practice. The six heads reflect the legend of the god's birth when six mother ( the six stars of the Pleiades) known as the Krittikas, took care of the newly born baby.
