Object history
Hippolyte Arnoux was a photographer based in Port Said, Egypt between c.1860-c.1890s. During the 1860s, he documented the construction of the Suez Canal, later releasing an album of photographs called "Album du Canal de Suez." On the back of this carte de visite, a stamp advertising the album can be seen. The phrase "Stereoscopies Instantanees" can be seen on the bottom of the carte de visite, advertising the fact that Arnoux's studio can produce instant stereoscopies, whereby an illusion of 3 dimensional depth is given using two 2 dimensional images of slightly differing perspectives, as well as Egyptian costumes.
