The artist Mal Dean was a highly productive illustrator and his work is of considerable interest both for his skilled and original draughtsmanship and also as a reflection of his connections with the Beat poets, the Underground press and the jazz world. His work included commissions to produce much of the publicity material and record sleeves for Pete Brown's group 'The Battered Ornaments'. He regularly produced jazz cartoons and reviews for 'Melody Maker' as well as other music papers and drew illustrations for 'International Times'
