Ritso was an accomplished amateur artist of Polish extraction. He was an officer in the Madras Army and took part in the third Mysore war. This watercolour is after a print by Robert Colebrooke printed in his Twelve Views of Places in the Kingdom of Mysore, the Country of Tippoo Sultan. The immediate popular appeal and success of these prints probably let Ritso to paint this picturesque image, portraying the rocky outcrops typical of Mysore and the Ramagiri fort.
