In 1715 Vanbrugh started the transformation of his little house at Chargate into the great mansion of Claremont for the Duke of Newcastle. An engraving by John Rocque of 1738 is taken from this viewpoint and is reproduced in Fig. 57 in Laurence Whistler's The Imagination of Vanbrugh and His Fellow Artist (1954). Claremont was demolished in 1769.
This drawing is part of the Vanbrugh Album from the Library at Elton Hall. The Album contains 254 drawings and includes works by Sir John Vanbrugh, Sir Edward Lovett Pearce, William Talman, Nicholas Hawksmoor, Richard Castle and anonymous draughtsmen in Vanbrugh's office. It was created ca. 1945-54 and was purchased by Victoria and Albert Museum in 1992.
E.2124:122 is also from the Vanbrugh Album and depicts corresponding designs for Claremont House.
