  • "A painter is to come hither on Monday to... finish T Sandby's fine view of the gallery, / to which I could never get him to put the last hand" Edward Edwards, ARA, a friend of TS who filled in the upper portrait on the right hand. The whole of the rest is by TS. (On a label under the mount.)
  • This drawing is mentioned by Horace Walpole in a letter to the Rev. W Cole, dated 16 June 1871. / purchased at Christies from Lord Waldegrave's sale of the Strawberry Hill collection, Feb 1900. (On a label on the back of the mount.)
  • I give this drawing by Thomas Sandby R.A. to the Victoria and Albert Museum / at South Kensington, for Exhibition there. / Feb 1904 W Sandby (Inscribed on back of drawing.)
