"A painter is to come hither on Monday to... finish T Sandby's fine view of the gallery, / to which I could never get him to put the last hand"
Edward Edwards, ARA, a friend of TS who filled in the upper portrait on the right hand. The whole of the rest is by TS.
On a label under the mount.

This drawing is mentioned by Horace Walpole in a letter to the Rev. W Cole, dated 16 June 1871. / purchased at Christies from Lord Waldegrave's sale of the Strawberry Hill collection, Feb 1900.
On a label on the back of the mount.

Bought at Lord Waldegrave's sale of pictures from Strawberry Hill, together with the drawing of the gallery made for Horace Walpole.
Reproduced as Plate 2 in Water-colour, by the Hon. Neville Lytton, 1911.
Date of acquisition: 31 December 1904.
