Physical description

Tin-glazed earthenware tile, square, transfer-printed in black with the title 'Mrs Yates in the character of Jane Shore' above and below of an actress. It is one of twenty-six tiles depicting portraits of famous actors and actress, each within a border of theatrical trophies, including ribbons inscribed with the name of the person and his or her part.

Object history note

Given by Lady Charlotte Schreiber, 1885. Purchased by her from Mr Edkins, Bristol, 1869.

The subject of this tile corresponds with a print published by T. Lowndes in 'Lowndes' New English Theatre' in 1776.
