Physical description

Tin-glazed earthenware tile, square, transfer-printed in black with the title 'Mr Macklin in the character of Shylock' above and below of an actor who is holding a balance and a knife. It is one of twenty-six tiles depicting portraits of famous actors and actress, each within a border of theatrical trophies, including ribbons inscribed with the name of the person and his or her part.

This tile corresponds with an illustration in Bell's edition of Shakespeare (1775).
