VASE AND CANDLESTICK

'American and European Art and Design 1800-1900'
About 1862 the Imperial Glassworks became the first to imitate the enamelled and gilded ornament on glass made under the Mamelukes in the 1100s and 1200s. The style's appeal was its two-dimensionality, in contrast with the lush naturalism fashionable during the previous forty years. Joseph Brocard in Paris, and Ludwig Lobmeyr in Vienna also adopted it in the 1870s and 1880s. These pieces were bought from the Paris Universal Exhibition of 1867. [1987-2006]
