PORTRAIT OF AN INDIAN WOMAN Possibly by Shiva Dayal Lal (c.1820-80) Watercolour on paper Patna c. 1850 IS.101-1949 P.C. Manuk and Miss G.M. Coles bequest; purchased through the Art Fund Artists from India took inspiration from British illustrations, drawings and engravings. With its subtle hues and background of classical architectural features and ships at sea, this painting reflects the stock motif of an idealised female type which was repeatedly produced across India in the 19th century. Portraits of this type were painted on both ivory and paper. The latter was favoured both for its ease of use and its availability.(01/08/2017)
