Gallery 100, 2016-17: ‘Tinted Venus’ by John Gibson; ‘The Bather’ by John Lawler; ‘Resignation’ by Giacomo Brogi; ‘Belphoebe’ by Unknown Sculptor 1850–90 A stereograph is a pair of images of a subject taken from slightly different angles. When viewed through a stereoscope, it gives the illusion of a three-dimensional image. Stereographs were inexpensive and widely collected in the late 19th century. The sculpture Tinted Venus aroused controversy when it was first exhibited in 1862. One magazine denounced it as ‘a naked impudent English woman’, while another thought it ‘one of the most beautiful and elaborate figures undertaken in modern times’. Stereographs Museum nos.
