Production
This drawing is a fascinating demonstration of the Flaxman tradition and the style of the Nazarenes combining in the middle of the 19th century to form a new manner. The precise purpose of the drawing is at present uncertain. The lack of detail suggests it is a design for sculptural relief, but Woodington showed a painting of the subject at the RA in 1880.
