This fan leaf, printed with a Chinoiserie design, is probably English in origin. When finished such fans would have been aimed at the cheaper end of the market and probably sold on the street.

Physical description

Fan leaf printed with a Chinoiserie design. Figures in a Chinese landscape printed on a double layer of paper. The landscape is in two halves with the left side a pastoral Western scene of hay gathering, and in the foreground women and children in Western costume gathering flowers, also a farmhouse and lambs. In the background are two men in a boat. On the right half is a Chinese landscape with two men and a woman in Chinese costume, one with a parosol and another with a tray of jugs, a pagoda and other structure (church?) in the background, the trees on a hillock in the background include palm trees. In the centre is a plant on a rock and a basket of flowers.
