Selected from the Paris Salon 1901, for the Museum by Alan Cole (son of the museum's first Director, Henry Cole) this bowl by A-E Dammouse (1848-1926) was 'to illustrate characteristic phases of French technique and workmanship adapting various materials for ornamental purpose' Described on acquisition as 'a cup of 'pâte d'email' with 'cloisons' of ceramic material enclosing decorative flowers, the material is one given different descriptive names depending on the method of its use and the resulting appearance. In essence, it is formed of a powdered glassy material which is related to glass, glaze and enamel all of which are silicate-based. Dammouse was one of a small group of artists experimenting with glass pastes of various sorts at the beginning of the century, following the work of Henry Cros. Dammouse, who worked with Ernest Chaplet, also worked in the Sèvres porcelain factory and was given a studio by the company in which to make these experiments.
