During the late 18th century, the state-owned porcelain factory in Vienna excelled in the production of finely-decorated porcelain in the Neo-Classical taste. This particularly successful period is associated with the directorship of Konrad von Sorgenthal. The gilded reliefs were built up by painting numerous layers of gold, each fired separately and burnished.
