Tablet with Biblical Quotations

Relief
1552 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Although Wurzburg remained a strongly Catholic city after the Reformation, the choice of only biblical quotations on this tablet shows the response even in Catholic centres to the Protestant emphasis on the Biblical text. The variety of scripts illustrate the range of florid styles used in handwriting as well as in other types of 16th century visual culture such as sculpture and architecture.
