Historical context
Italian potters brought the Italian technique of tin-glazed earthenware (maiolica) to the Netherlandish. The blue and orange striped decoration around the middle of the pot is copied from Italian examples. Originally, potters in Italy had taken this decorative motif from imported Spanish lustred ceramics, but unable to produce lustre themselves, they substituted the lustre with orange.
