Object history
Volume containing 136 drawings. Most are on laid paper (some with Dutch watermarks); a few on wove paper; pasted one or two to a sheet, on buff coloured sheets, of which there are 140 (ff.108 - 140 unused). When acquired bound in crimson morocco, gold tooling and green leather inlays. The front cover inscribed: ANGELICA KAUFFMANN VALENTE NE'RITRATTI TANTO DELL'ANTICO STUDIOSA CHE NOVELLO CAMPO S'APERSE AL VERO E ALLA SCELTA DE' MODELLI ADORNI DI GRAZIA E VENUSTA'. The volume has since been bebound in blue buckram. The collector's mark of G Vallardi appears on almost all the drawings. Pencil, chalks, ink, wash.
Note: Ex coll G Vallardi, Countess Imeretinsky, B Ceccate and And Vit Mandl. This sketchbook is discussed by Peter Walch, 'An Early Neo-Classical Sketchbook by Angelica Kauffmann', The Burlington Magazine, February 1977, pp.98-111. Walch dates the volume as 1762-66, the period of Kauffmann's first visit to Italy. Nos 92, 24, 103, 108, 130, 131, 132, 133, 134, 135, 136, have no Vallardi Collection mark and according to Walch are unlikely to be by Kauffmann.
