This is one of a series of designs for the refurbishment of the interior of Bodelwyddan Castle, which was carried out between 1988 and 1989. In 1988, the castle was purchased by Clwyd County Council with the intention of transforming it into a museum and art gallery. Up until 2017, the tower of the castle housed a long term loan of 130 paintings from the National Portrait Gallery, and the refurbishment by Roderick Gradidge was commissioned to prepare the space for this display. The castle was originally built as a manor house in the mid 15th century, and was remodelled as a castle in the gothic style between 1830 and 1832. Roderick Gradidge was an expert on Arts & Crafts and Victorian architecture, and Bodelwyddan Castle was one of the many restoration projects to historic buildings and interiors that he undertook over the course of his career.
