Place of origin |
Devotional moulded plaques in this style, loosely derived from sculptural prototypes, were made in many places in Italy in the Renaissance and later, either for private devotion or for public shrines.
The original model for this panel, a marble relief produced in Florence in the late 15th century, either by Antonio Rossellino or Benedetto da Maiano, was one of the most widely reproduced of Renaissance images of the Virgin and Child.
Several maiolica versions of this panel exists, probably all derived from the same mould.
