Four pavilions, like those shown in these designs, were built on the east side of Castle Howard, probably in 1710 and 1711. The corresponding pavilions on the west side were never built. See L. Whistler (1954).

Purchased from the Marquis of Bute at auction at Sotheby's (lot 19.11) on 23 May 1951 by the National Arts Collection Fund and given to the V & A.
