This elevation evidently corresponds with the early plan shown in E.418-1951. The block was subsequently extended in length by inserting niches between the four sets of twin pilasters, the order was changed from Corinthian to Doric, and round-headed windows were used in place of rectangular ones.

Purchased from the Marquis of Bute at auction at Sotheby's (lot 19.9) on 23 May 1951 by the National Arts Collection Fund and given to the V & A.
