The fuchi-kashira are the collare and pommel on the hilt of a sword. This pair are made of the copper-gold alloy shakudo with a hammered stone effect (ishime) ground and are inlaid with two butterflies in gold and mother-of-pearl.

These were mounted at the lower end and top of the hilt of the sword. They were generally made of iron or copper alloy but some makers used horn and other materials. The design of the two components would be on a particular theme, and the decoration could be matching or complementary. The pommel (kashira) at the top would be prominently visible when the sword was worn.
