Margaret Mathews studied art for two years (1927-1929) with a Mrs. Vince, an interior decorator in Kensington, along with two other students. As part of the course, Margaret attended classes in lettering at Chelsea Polytechnic, as well as learning book-keeping, upholstery and studying the works of art to be seen in London’s museums. The aim was to equip at least two of the three students to set up their own interior decorating business; however, it proved difficult for these women to establish their own enterprise when the time came. Among other jobs, Margaret worked at Gordon Russell, a furniture manufacturing firm in Worcestershire, before moving to Uganda when she married in 1937. In 1948, she returned to England with her husband where they converted an old mill in Suffolk. The mill features in many of the family Christmas cards she designed during the fifties.
