Gillian Lowndes' experimental collaged works often incorporate found objects, like the cup in this sculpture. The elements of this piece have been fired to the brink of destruction, and the result seems almost like an archaeological find, tenuously held together by the interwoven pieces of metal.
Physical description
Irregular stack of grey-white slabs with a yellow and white handbuilt form and part of a yellow cup (found object) on the top.
One of a volume of thirty folios depicting castes, occupations, methods of cultivation and procession scenes.
1. A Tamil Sonarta Brahmin; the man carrying a palm-leaf manuscript, the woman a waterpot.
2. A Tamil Iyengar Brahmin.
3. A couple, possibly fan-makers, each holding a fan.
