George Edward Mackley (1900-1983)
Four wood-engravings for Forestry Commission Guides
1958-1961
The introduction of tree plantations by the Forestry Commission in the 1950s was deeply unpopular with the public. In order to promote forest parks to visitors and to overcome the lack of mature plantations to photograph as illustrations to their Guides, the Forestry Commission resorted to using artistic impressions of the forests, showing them blending into the surrounding landscape.
