Object history note

The series represents a new foray by the British advertising industry into the field of religious propaganda. By the use of teasing anagrams of the word LIFE. (IE.LF; E.ILF; FLE.I; etc) produced in a sequence, Foote Cone & Belding Advertising Ltd. (FCB) sought to raise advance public awareness of Billy Graham's tour in an elliptical yet focused way.
The campaign had both professional and practical success: it won Campaign Magazine's campaign of the year award in 1989, and the Billy Graham tour itself attracted 378,000 people to the live events, with a further 817,000 watching at venues outside of London via satellite link-ups.
With this and other campaigns such as Saatchi & Saatchi's promotion of the Bible for the publisher Hodder & Soughton, a new era of hard-sell religious advertising may have been dawning in Britain.

Other posters in the 'teaser' campaign are E.1058 to E.1063-1990, which can be found in the Prints, Drawings and Paintings Collection.

Poster is a smaller version of E.1058-1990
