This hand guard for a sword, or tsuba, is covered in shibuichi, an alloy of copper and silver which is normally patinated to give a wide variety of colours from silver to brown as well as a range of greys. This, along with some gold, silver and copper make an image, in relief, of monkey trainers with their animals. On the reverse can be found a wood-cutter and two boys beneath a pine tree, along with a gold inlaid seal-mark and a signature stating "drawn at Tokyo with the iron brush by Sadamoto Uso".
