Place of origin

Having arriving in England as an émigré from Nazi Germany, Hans Coper gained employment making ceramic buttons in the workshop of Lucie Rie in 1946. He went on to become one of the most celebrated potters of the post-war period, producing work with intense sculptural presence. Exploring a restricted range of highly individual forms, he combined an interest in Modernist sculpture with a sense of the archaic.
