On the obverse there is the inscription VICTORIA BY THE GRACE OF GOD QVEEN & EMPRESS 1897 and a crowned and laureated bust of Queen Victoria. On the reverse an inscription within a laurel wreath which reads NATIONAL MEDAL FOR SVCCESS IN ART AWARDED BY THE DEPARTMENT OF SCIENCE AND ART.
