Object history note

The elder brother was an architect and the younger brother an heraldic painter. In 1840, using the Daguerreotype process the family established the firm Bisson Pere et Fils. In the early 1850s they switched their process to glass negatives and paper prints. The brothers, now Bisson Freres, were made photographers to Emperor Napoleon III in 1860.
