Jar

1400-1600 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

This Korean stoneware jar has a slightly uneven ovoid shape. The upper half of its body has been decorated with a creamy white clay slip. Scrolling motifs in brown iron oxide have been freely painted onto this white slip. Spots of iron oxide can also be seen where this paint has splashed onto the body.

This jar was made in Korea during the early part of the Joseon dynasty (1392-1910). It is a type of stoneware known as buncheong. Buncheong wares were made between 1400 and 1600. They are stonewares with fairly coarse bodies and are often decorated with white slip. Sometimes, as on this jar, brown iron oxide is also used to create the design.

Buncheong ceramics are particularly noted for their spontaneity, evident here in both the free-spirited decoration and uneven form of this stoneware jar.
