Physical description

A drawing of a girl wearing a flower wreath with green, pink and red ribbons, white shirt with red and yellow geometrical pattern, red skirt with pink, orange and yellow geometrical a floral patterns, embroidered petticoat, red sash, white stockings, red shoes and red beads around the neck.
Includes a separate design for a green apron with a floral and wavy pattern in purple and red.

Signed in black body-colour.

Blue squares with the same flowers as on the original and also with a red outline. A yellow apron. Flowers as on the original but their colour to be changed from lilac to green. Without a pink border. All flowers are bright red and a short light green waistcoat. Without the pink line and in green. Yellow blouse. Apron as according to the original. Embroidery is in orange and red the background colour of the apron is white instead of green and a green belt.
Inscribed in Russian all over.

Object history note

This costume design was created for an adaptation for ballet of Mussorgsky's opera based on the story by Gogol. The earliest version with décor and costumes by Goncharova was staged at the Théâtre des Champ-Élysées in 1926. This drawing is for a later production given by the Ballets Russes de Paris at the Salle Pleyel, Paris in August 1940.
Purchased from the artist in 1961.
