Cabinet-on-stand. French or Dutch; about 1675. W.1-1963 Marquetry panels of various woods enclosing oval panels of tortoiseshell with pewter patterning. Borders of ebony: the legs of ebonised wood. Mounts of brass. Behind the door is a stage –like area flanked with mirror- glass and with a figure from the Italian Comedy executed in marquetry at the back. Two figures once reclined on the central pediment. There may also originally have been a small gallery –rail round the top of this cabinet. A very similar cabinet in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, is thought to be Parisian although both cabinets display marked Netherlandish features, (compare with the example on the left probably made at Antwerp). A Dutch craftsman working in Paris may have been responsible for this. Pierre Golle, for instance came from Holland to work for Mazarin, for whom he made a pair of ebony cabinets inlaid with pewter. Later he was engaged by Louis XIV and was renowned for the delicacy of his furniture which was described as being “forte legere”. When compared with the massive furniture of the early part of the 17th century, cabinets such as this must have seemed astonishingly graceful. Marquetry of tortoiseshell and pewter here used discreetly in small panels was to become a popular method of embellishing furniture in Paris towards the end of the century. The most famous craftsman working in this technique was André-Charles Boulle and his technique is generally known as “boulle-work” although it was by no means exclusively used by that master craftsman. Given by Terence Kennedy Esq. [probably c1975]
