On Signal Hill, overlooking Long Beach, California

Photograph
1983 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Since the 1960s, Adams’s main photographic subject has been the urban encroachment into the landscape of the American West. In his work, a sense of hope for nature’s persistence is balanced against despair with man’s destruction of what was, until relatively recently, wilderness. In this photograph, a wiry pair of deciduous trees contends with the smoggy expanse of the cityscape beyond, dominated by rows of palms.
