Musique

Roundel
1880-1900 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

This roundel and its pair (A.24-2005) appear to have been specifically designed as decorative buttons by two artists more usually associated with commemorative medal design. They were probably part of a series depicting putti engaged in various activities. This one shows three naked and winged putti engaged in making music. The central figure stands on a low stage conducting from a musical score, those either side of him are playing the violin and a wind instrument respectively. The image reflects the romantic, decorative style of the late 1800s in France, and of French medal design of the period.
