Horticulture

Medal
1880-1894 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

This roundel and its pair (A.25-2005) appear to have been specifically designed as decorative buttons by two artists more usually associated with commemorative medal design. They were probably part of a series depicting putti engaged in various activities. This roundel shows three naked and winged putti engaged in gardening. The central figure prunes a tree, while those either side of him are digging and using a watering can respectively. They are among growing plants. The image reflects the romantic, decorative style of the late 1800s in France, and of French medal design of the period.
