This bronze medal was struck in commemoration of the opening of the Blackwall Tunnel in London in 1897. The obverse depicts Queen Victoria while the reverse has a perspective view of the tunnel surrounded by an emblematic border of rose, thistle and shamrock, the Prince of Wales's feather and the Royal Arms and motto. It was presented to the South Kensington Museum by the London County Council.

Physical description | Medal, bronze, struck in commemoration of the opening of the Blackwall Tunnel, London. Obv.: VICTORIA. DEI. GRA: BRITT: REGINA. FID: DEF: INBD: IMP MDCCCXCVII ANNO REGNI LX. Laureated and crowned bust of Her Majesty to left. Rev.: BLACKWALL TUNNEL CONSTRUCTED BY THE LONDON COUNTY COUNCIL AND OPENED BY H.R.H THE PRINCE OF WALES K.G. ON BEHALF OF H.M THE QUEEN MAY XXII MDCCCXCVII. In the centre a perspective view of the tunnel surrounded by an emblematic border of rose, thistle and shamrock; above, a Prince of Wales's feather with the motto ICH DIEN; below, the Royal Arms with the motto DIEU ET MON DROIT. Signed F B, and SPINK & SON LONDON, and engraved round the edge PRESENTED TO THE SOUTH KENSINGTON MUSEUM. |
